The Story of Ping (FI♥AR)

FI♥AR- The Story of Ping by by Marjorie Flack and Kurt Wiese

September 10-14, 2012

"Ping is a little duck living with his 50+ relatives on a boat on the Yangtze River. Every day the ducks leave the boat to swim and hunt for food, and at night the master calls them all back. Ping is always careful not to be the last duck back up the little bridge into the boat, for the last duck always gets a spank upon the back. One day Ping gets careless, and too afraid to take his punishment, he decides to hide instead of joining his family on the boat." ~ Rainbow Resource

Monday:  Social Science- Discernment

Ping doesn't want to take his punishment for not obeying and now discovers that the loneliness, and danger he encounters are far worse than any punishment he might receive.  We talked about this and why their are consequences for our actions.  Which is to keep us save.

Language art - sequence cards

Today we used sequence cards put out by Homeschool shareI forgot to get a picture of Fluttershy putting her cards in order.  I would tell her each part of the story and she would find the right picture and put them in order.

Tuesday: Art:  duck craft

We found this cute little duck crafts here.    Fluttershy's duck is the one with one big eye and one small eye.  She said she wanted to make it a silly duck.  That she did.  Complete with dots.

Math:  Counting skills

Wow Ping has a lot of family member.  Mother, father, two sisters, three brothers, eleven aunts, seven uncles, and forty-two cousins.  Add that all up and you 68.  We colored in every duck as we named them.

Wednesday: Science: Buoyancy

For science I can't resists experiments.  We did two fun and interactive activities.  The first one we found a printable worksheet at Homeschool share.    First we made our predictions of whether or not each item would float or sink.  Rarity is showing you the items we tried.

Fluttershy got 6 out of 10 correct.  Our paper clip sunk even though I was trying to re-in-act  an experiment that a teacher in college had me do, in which you can make a paper clip float with surface tension.  I was however, unable to make it float.  We'll have to try this again.

Our second experiment was really neat.  I found it over at home science tools.

Liquid Density

1-Fill a cup wtih 1/3 of water, oil, and syrup.

See what happens?  They separate.

  • the syrup is the most dense so it sinks to the bottom

  • the water was less dense thatn the syrup but ore dense that the oil is it settled on the top of the syrup

  • the oil was the least dense so it floated on top of the water

2- Next add a few items to see how dense they are.

How did the sink/float?

  • our penny sank to the bottom

  • the grape sat on the syrup

  • the bead sat on the water

  • the wax sat on the oil.

In Saxon K math we learned how to make a graph with our family members.  Friday:  Cooking

Here is what we are making for dinner.  All Chinese inspired.

Egg drop soup

Egg fried rice

Egg rolls

and fortune cookies

  2. Looks good! Cute pictures! When my now almost 22 yo was 5 she did a little science fair project on buoyancy. Your photos brought back memories. So thank you!

  3. We love The Story of Ping!! We are actually going to read it again next week even though the boys are older because we are studying China and love the story. There is so much to learn from it. Looks like you had a great week! I especially loved the Density Tower. They are so much fun. Thank you for linking up to the History and Geography Meme.
