Once a catapiller, now a butterfly

Once a pretty little caterpillar, now she's a beautiful butterfly.

We have really enjoyed having our little friend "Golorow" with us for the last 2 weeks.  Every morning we would get up and check on her.  What a neat experience we've had learning about the life cycle of the amazing Monarch Butterfly.  I wish that they were easier to come by.  We've been looking for the last couple of summers for one of these and have come up empty handed.  Then when we weren't looking for one there it was.  I think Fluttershy likes butterflies even more now that we watched her change into an amazing butterfly. I was really surprised how fast they turn.

On Wednesday her cocoon was still green and by Thursday morning she had gotten her colors.  By lunch time on Thursday she had emerged. We kept her long enough for Daniel to get home and see her before we let her go.  I can't believe how big Monarchs are. Looking at her sitting on Fluttershy's hand really made her look even bigger.  She's off and living her life free and enjoying all the flowers she can.  Isn't she just beautiful?

fyi, it's a boy. ;-) The black dots on the hind wings mean it's a male. http://mamamusingsblog.blogspot.com/2010/09/monarch-butterflies.html

  2. Such sweet pictures. We found a chrysalis last year but were gone the day it hatched. I hope we find another this year.

  4. This is such a beautiful process. It is a big butterfly! Did you find the caterpillar or did you order it from somewhere? We found black swallowtail caterpillars earlier this summer and raised and release them. So fun. Thanks for sharing at the AfterSchool party!
