A Pair of Red Clogs (FI♥AR)

Pair of Red Clogs

FI♥AR - A Pair of Red Clogs by Masako Matsuno

September 17-20, 2012

Oh, the wonder of nice, clean new shoes! When Mako’s mother takes her to get a new pair of clogs for school, she looks at all the lovely colors before choosing a beautiful, shiny red pair. She is so pleased with the way they look and the wonderful noise they make as she walks along. While playing a game with her friends, Mako cracks one of her beautiful clogs, and she quickly grows disenchanted with them. Is Mako desperate enough for a new pair that she will do something dishonest?  ~ Rainbow Resource

Monday:  Social Science - Japanese culture

For social studies we tried a few Japanese culture activities.  We made our own red clogs with red foam paper and pipe cleaners.  Who knew that this simple pair of clogs would be so much fun for the girls.  They are still wearing them.  For lunch we ate on the floor and make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches rolled up like a fruit roll up and sliced to look like sushi .

Tuesday: Art - Origami

Our origami project was a simple one this time for how young my girls are.  A simple puppy that was easy enough for my 4 year old to follow me making one for her sister.  Our other activity for art was learning about a unifying theme.  Every page of the book except 1 (which was the first page)  had the color yellow on it.

Math: Counting

We counted the clogs in the book.  We think there was 46.

Wednesday: Science - Making rain

As you can see from the pictures, our science activity was a hit.  We made it rain.  Using a cup, hot water, a plate, and ice.  Place steaming water in a cup and place a plate on top for about a minute.  Place ice on top of the plate and watch as rain drops start to drop.

Saxon Math K

This week we introduced the linking cubes.  These simple little cubes have so many uses.  Both girls enjoyed playing with these.

For our five in a row meal this week our recipe book suggested steamed fish and rice.  Since my girls are at a picky time with their food we substituted fish sticks instead with our rice.  Setting on pillows to eat was about the coolest thing for my girls.

  2. Checking out your "row" from Delightful Learning's Link up; we plan on rowing this book next week. Love the idea to make clogs from red foam and pipe cleaners-- cheap and easy to do! Thanks!
