Making your own Aurora Borealis

Making your own Aurora borealis

I was so impressed by the results of this art project.  The effects are neat. It's shimmery and rainbow like.  Though I've never need the aurora borealis, I've seen pictures and think this project is a good example of what it looks like.

To make your own aurora borealis you'll need:

Black construction paper

clear finger nail polish

jelly roll pan

water

crayon

  1. Draw a landscape picture on a dark colored construction paper.

  2. Fill your jelly roll pan half with water

  3. Add 2-3 drops of clear finger nail polish onto the water.  Watch the drops disperse.

  4. Take your landscape picture and submerge the picture under the water.  Making sure you pull up some of the nail polish that is laying on top of the water.

  5. Remove the paper and let dry on newspaper.

  6. While the paper is drying gently rub any nail polish off of any areas on your picture that isn't sky.  It's very easy to rub it off.  That leaves the aurora borealis effect in the sky.

Note:  The nail polish will not ruin your pan.  It stays on the water and is easily cleaned off.

  2. Ohhh, my son will love this! He is fascinated with the aurora borealis, from watching a show called Dinosaur Train and they go see it. Pinning this to try with him. Thanks for sharing!
