Very Last First Time (FI♥AR)

Very Last First Time

FI♥AR- Very Last First Time

October 29- November 2, 2012

"Hunting for mussels on the frozen sea floor is a common practice in Eva’s Inuit village. Ever since she was a little girl, she has accompanied her mother below the icy surface in hopes to gather enough to fill their buckets. This year is different, though. This year Eva must go alone. Join her as she collects mussels for eating and races to finish before the tide comes in. Written by Jan Andrews with colored illustrations by Ian Wallace." Rainbow Resources

The best part of this book was is was so fascinating learning a totally different lifestyle and from it we were able to do so many fun activities and projects.

Monday: Geography and Inuit Culture

On Monday after first reading the book we had to look up where Ungave Bay way.  Our map didn't show it.  We located it up in the tundra.  Did you know that it is a very unique area in which the tide drops about 40 feet and is only out for 30 minutes?  This allows the Inuit people to climb under the ice and walk on the see floor when the tide is out.  They do this to collect mussels. But they have to be quick because the tide comes in so quickly it is very dangerous.

Tuesday: Art- Cool/warm colors & pointillism

We found several fun art projects that we had a had time choosing one so we did several

In Very Last First Time the illustrator uses warm and cool colors on different pages.  We did a brief lesson on which colors are warm and cool.  Then we went through the book pointing out which pages used warm and which pages used cool colors.  This turtle we made by coloring two different turtles.  One page we colored with warm and the other page we colored with cool colors.  Next we weaved the two pages together to make a fun combination of the colors.

The illustrator also used pointillism in his drawings.  Our next project we created a pointillism picture of a pumpkin.

Our next art project was creating an Aurora Boreallis.  It was really fun and neat to make these.
