Katy and the Big Snow (FI♥AR)

FI♥AR- Very Last First Time

November 26- November 30, 2012

Katy and the Big Snow"Katy was a beautiful red crawler tractor. She was very big and very strong and could do many things. On a day when the snow is piling up to the second story windows and the whole town has emergencies all over, can she still save the day? From Virginia Lee Burton, also author of The Little House, Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel, and Choo Choo comes this story of duty, determination, and strength." - Rainbow Resources

When I was laying out out FIAR schedule I place Katy and the Big Snow toward the first week of December because I thought we would have had some snow by now.  But as "Luck" would have it, we still are having sunny weather.  I'm ok with that.  We can make our own pretend snow and have just as much fun with out having to bundle up.

Monday: Social Studies - Running a City

For social science we made our own city like they had in the book.  Our was out of block though.  Fluttershy and Rarity designed their own houses that their cars would drive through the city for.  We made a grocery story, gas station, and many others.

Tuesday: Art - Snow men

Since we didn't have snow we make our own snow men with cotton balls.

Wednesday: Science- Weather & Snow

First, we watched the weather throughout the week and took notice of what our weather was with our date and calendar chart.  We used our Elemental Science lesson to incorporate wind into our science lesson this week.

Exploring science Unit 3: Week 2

After we listened to The three Pigs on Librivox we used the Science Play experiment "I'll Huff & Puff", "Fabulous Straws" and "Water drops.

  • I'll Huff and Puff- Discovered how blowing air through a straw on our hand makes the air move more quickly than just blowing on our hand.

  • Fabulous Straws-  We raced a plastic water bottle lid and a plastic ball using only wind power.  The ball one because it's round and would keep rolling.

  • Water Drops- Raced water drops on a piece of wax paper by means of blowing the drops with the straws.  We tried this several times because it was so neat.  This is something I've never tried before and I have to admit I was surprised to see the water droplet stay together and blow across the paper.

Science craft- Air painting.  Using air from our straws we blew paint to make neat designs.

Making your own snow

Mix Shaving cream and Elmer's white glue. We didn't measure anything. Just poured and squished till we had snow.
