Kennecott Mine


Part of our Memorial weekend we went to Kennecott Mine.  The worlds largest open pit mine.  It's 2 3/4 miles across the top and almost 1 mile deep.  It was impressive to look at.  





 It was really windy looking over the edge.  Just about blew us away. 


 Notice the dump trucks in the picture above.  Now look at the picture below at one of it's tires. 

Stats on the tires:

 Each tire is 12' 6" high

Each tire costs $25,000

Each truck has 6 tires

The tires only last 1 year



Yikes!  I thought my car tires were expensive. It was an interesting trip.  They say in a video that there is only 1% copper in the rock when they dig it out and after they crush it and put it through their processing they can get it to 99% copper finished product.
