First Day of School

DSC_0020First Day of school

Our morning started out bright and early.  I got up with Daniel at 6:00 so I could see him off to his new semester.  I finished up a few of the last minute things I needed for school and relaxed while I waited for the girls to get up at 7:00 a.m.  Once they were up Fluttershy was raring to go.  We enjoyed a pancake breakfast and went right into school.

I had planned on an 8:00 starting time for school, but with all the excitement over school, the girls ate a bit faster than normal and we got a start at 7:30.  We started out with reading time.  First Fluttershy spent 10 minutes on an Ordinary parents’ guide to teaching reading lesson learning about the sound “oe” make as in Joe, Hoe, Woe and the sight work Shoe. She then had her chance at reading to me with her I See Sam book and Splat the Cat.  After her lessons I read to the girls for half an hour with library books. Once reading was over we moved into our new workboxes.

This morning Fluttershy did math first.  We are waiting for our Math Mammoth from homeschool buyers which will be sent to us the on Saturday.  Till them we will work with our math manipulatives and abacus.  Next we did writing from Zaner-bloser.  Today we mainly worked with her proper pencil grip and tried to determine which hand she likes to write with.  She uses both for most things.  After Writing we tried out Explode the Code.  These were easily completed in 10 minutes and we moved on to our Safety Kids program which was a hit.  At the end of the day the girls made me play the songs over and over again, till I couldn’t get the songs out of my head.  At least they like them.

For science next we did an Elemental Science Unit on Shadows.  We went outside for one activity to mark our shadows throughout the day then charted them in our notebook.  Science also had a indoor shadow activity and coloring page.  At this point in our day we realized we had to take a trip to the store to return our “new” broken cd player.  Crazy thing is it waited till the last day of its warranty to break.  After we got back home we ate lunch and had our quiet hour time.  (This is a must for moms who need a moment for themselves.)  I also have found that the girls do enjoy “their” time.

After quiet time we continued our last few items of the day with a our fun box and abcmouse.com.  Our fun box today was Uno.  Fluttershy enjoyed learning a new game and it didn’t hurt that Uno came out with a princess version on it.  After abcmouse.com time it was free play time for the rest of the day.  Each subject lasted a brief 10-15 minutes.  Adding our afternoon time in to our morning time, our day lasted 2 ½ hours.  I estimated our school days would last 2-3 hours so we are on track.  From now on we’ll try to get our school days finished before lunch.  That way we’ll have the freedom to play and go places when we’d like.

I was a great first day with lots of enthusiasm. Fluttershy is so excited and so ambitious.  She loves learning and it always willing to do more.  This will be a fun year with not pressure and lots of fun.
