2013-2014 Curriculum

2013-2014 Curriculum clip art

For Kindergarten, our plans are to have a strong focus on the 3R's with some extras thrown in for fun. We'll will keep lessons short and enjoyable. Fluttershy really enjoys learning and I want her love of learning to continue to grow. She's very ambitious and really has enjoyed everything we did in Preschool. She's is really looking forward to Kindergarten.

Kindergarten

Reading:

My goal for this year is to help Fluttershy on her way to become a strong reader . We will continue to use Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading as she has done so well with it.  Using OPGTR along with the I See Sam readers she is becoming a great little reader.  In addition, we'll add Explode the Code for some added phonics strength.

Writing:

We will be starting our first writing practice with Zaner-Bloser.  The workbook looks gentle.  We'll just move at the speed she's comfortable with as her fine motor skills haven't quite developed yet.

Math:

Playing around with Saxon K and other hands on math games.

Science:

Science will just be an extra activity that the girls will enjoy.  Exploring science uses the fun Science Play book as it's spine along with nature walks. It will be used twice a week 2-3 times a month as long as she's still enjoying it. To this we'll add in some Magic School Bus videos to add some exposure to different science topics.

Art:

Once a week, we'll dive into Art for the Very Young to let the girls explore some of their creativity. Each of the projects in the book are super simple and just the right level for Kindergarten.

Cooking:

On Fridays, we have planned to have some fun with cooking.  This neat cook book has two pages for each recipe.  The first page is laid out like a tradition recipe, and the second is mostly pictures with simple directions for a young child.  Both my girls love to help cook so I thought we'd have set aside some time every week for some cooking fun.

Extras:

Last but not least, we have a few extras that will be once or so a week.  We will go through the Safety kids program that was a program I did when I was in elementary and have fond memories of.  It comes with cute songs and a coloring book. I'm not sure how much we'll get into financial peace jr. but I thought we'd start reading the picture books and maybe start using his program as she gets closer to the end of the year.  ABC mouse has just been a fun kindergarten online program both girls have enjoyed over the past year. I do have to limit Fluttershy though.  She'd play all day.

Preschool

For Rarity's preschool we'll continue to go through the alphabet.  She already knows her letter sounds so we'll just gently work through them again with tot school printables and preschool printablesShe'll join Fluttershy with cooking, art, and science if she wants to.  We'll do lots of reading time and go to the library often.
