The Rag Coat (FI♥AR)

FI♥AR- The Rag Coat by Lauren Mills

January 7-11, 2013

"Minna would love to go to school, but she has no winter coat. When the Quilting Mothers find out, they determine that she will have a coat by wintertime. As they quilt scraps of cloth together, Minna gets to hear about all of the wonderful stories attached to the old, worn out clothes they came from. Every day she runs home, eager to see how her “coat of many colors” is coming along. Minna can’t wait until she can share the coat with her classmates on her “sharing day,” but her classmates have a very different perspective on her rag coat." Rainbow Resource

Monday: social studies  & Math

The Rag Coat is set in the eastern United States.  Specifically, The Rag Coat is set in the Appalachian mountains, a range of highlands running from Pennsylvania to Alabama. After we read the book for the first time we went and located it on our map.  We discussed how some things were different in the time that Minna lived in the book. She had a one-room schoolhouse, rode in a wagon, and she house was heated by a pot-bellied stove. Today we also made coal cookies and went on a coal scavenger hunt. Once we gathered all our coal we counted them.

Math: Paying for items to 10¢.  We played grocery store.

Tuesday: art

For art we made our own rag coats scraps of fabrics for our doll drawing and gave her yarn hair.  Today we also had a sensory bin to dig for coal and gems.

Math: Creating and reading an AABB color pattern.

Wednesday: Science

Science this week was a fun one.  We made a coal flower garden using laundry bluing, ammonia, salt, and water.  We started on Monday and this picture was day 5.  Every morning Fluttershy and Rarity were excited to check out the progress on their garden.
