FI♥AR- How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World by Marjorie Priceman
October 1-4, 2012
"Making an apple pie is simple, really. Just go to the store, buy the ingredients, mix them up, and bake. What if the store is closed though? Your quest for ingredients could take you to Italy, Jamaica, and even Sri Lanka - if you want the finest supplies. An amusing storyline with colorful illustrations".- Rainbow resources
So far I think this has been our favorite Five in a Row book. How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World with it's simple story line and amusing illustrations was always entertaining each time we read it. Our activities included picking apples at Great-Grandma's house, Apple prints, Apple counting, and an introduction of around the world.
Monday: Geography
We discussed several new countries we haven't talked about yet. Each ingredient came from a different location.
- Italy: Semolina wheat for making the pizza crust.
- France: Fancy eggs
- Sri Lanka: The bark of the Kurundu tree (ground into Cinnamon)
- England: Milk from good mannered cows.
- Jamaica: Sugar cane.
- Vermont: Apples.
Art: Apple Prints
Wednesday: Science- Salt and Evaporation
We actually started this science experiment on Monday so it would have time to evaporate by the time we finished our week with the book. We took 2 cups of water and dissolved 1/4 cup of salt into it. Then we placed the water in a pie pan in the window and let it evaporate. Here is our finished produce. Although it looks like more than 1/4 cup of salt.
We also made our own apple pie from the apple we picked at great-grandma's.
Oooh that apple pie looks good!
