Home made water fireworks

 Science Experiment:
Water fireworks

What you’ll need:

-Tall glass vase
-Oil
-Food Coloring
-Water
-A smaller cup/glass
-Fork

Directions:

Fill up the glass vase with room temperature water almost to the top of the vase. In another cup add some oil and 4 drops of food coloring.  Notice they form balls?  Take your fork and gently stir, which creates a bunch of smaller balls of food coloring.

Pour the oil gently into the water and the oil will group back up on the top of the vase.  Patiently wait for the coloring to slowly sink to the bottom of the oil.

Once the coloring touches the water it will pop open and create really neat fire work looking color show.  At times I thought they looked like jelly fish. Either way it’s a neat and fascinating show.

Today’s inspiration came from a wonderful site:  http://www.jugglingwithkids.com/2011/08/fireworks-in-glass.html

Glowing fun

How to make glow play dough

Glow Play-dough
Ingredients:
  • 2 c. flour
  • 2 c. water
  • 2 or 3 different neon paints
  • 2 tsp. cream of tartar (you can substitue 1/4 tsp of lemon juice or white vinegar for each 1/8 tsp of cream of tartar. Be aware if you use vinegar, the play-doh will have a vinegar smell)
  • 1/2 c. salt
  • 2 tsp. oil

Add all ingredients except paint to a bowl and stir together mixing well. Divide mixture up into 2 or 3 bowl (depending on how many colors you want to make).  Mix in neon paint into each bowl.  Use just enough paintto make the color vibrant.  Pour 1 bowl into sauce pan and cook over medium heat for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring constantly till it forms a ball. Place dough on a plate to cool. Cook remaining colors Store in zip-loc bag.  Shows up nicely under a black light.

 My little glowing artists.

Cookie cutters are lots of fun with play dough’s, especially when you can make a starry scene that glows.

We used our own play dough recipe, but got the glowing idea from http://playathomemom3.blogspot.com/

Hard and Soft Sensory

 Sensory Saturday #3
 Which is hard and soft?

Today's sensory experience included water bead, jewel stones.
We talked about the colors of each object and whether or not it was hard or soft.  Did it bounce or not?  Those little water beads are great for bouncing.  They'll fly all over.  And of course the stones just thumped. I intended on this activity to be a opposites activity.  I think Fluttershy really enjoyed the bouncing part a lot.

Making marbled paper the fun way

Making marbled paper the fun way

 You'll  need:
A tub, shaving cream, food coloring, and card stock.
Half of the fun was spraying the shaving cream in the tub.

Smooth out the shaving cream with their hands and add drops of food coloring.
 Swirl the colors around.
Place card stock on shaving cream and rub your hands over the paper making sure its touching the shaving cream really well.
Lay the paper out on a flat surface for a few hours till the shaving cream has dried.

Then of course you need to get messy.

Once the shaving cream has dried after 3-5 hours rub off the dried shaving cream with your hand to reveal your master piece.

Winter wonderwhat?

What is the world happened?
We woke up to a fluffy winter storm this morning. We gained 3-4 inches of snow.  Since the girls have been begging to go sledding for the last 2 month and since this has been our only real snow for while i thought it was a great idea.  I pulled the girls around on the sled for as long as I had the energy for.  We next made this rather fabulous snow man.  Don't you think?  It even had a celery smile.   It was seriously cold outside, but it was a lot of fun. I'm glad I jumped on this activity before we had lunch and naps because.......

after nap, 2 hours later, they woke to find this.  What in the world happened to our snow?  Poor snowman didn't even have a chance.  You can see Daisy our dog eating the poor snowman's celery smile and carrot nose.  I guess that's why our snowman had such a sad look on his face.  He knew what was coming.

Look at Rarity.  She just can't figure out what happened to her snowman.  She kept saying "snowman broke,  fix it pease."  I can't believe it was gone in only 2 hours.  That's crazy.  Glad I didn't put off our snow activity until after lunch.
