K Week 3

DSC_0225K Week 3

Math: We Change things up a bit and went back to Saxon 1.  I think I will revisit Math Mammoth in the spring when Fluttershy’s handwriting is more developed.  I also noticed that the math in Math Mammoth seemed more advanced than Saxon 1.  Saxon is all about hands on whereas Math Mammoth is more worksheet oriented.  I feel both math programs have great potential, but while Fluttershy is learning better hand control, I think it’s best to go with the math that is more hands on.

This week we did lessons 1-4.  As I expected it was complete review from the K book.  It was almost too simple for her and I will need to evaluate the lessons a bit more next week.  The thing that keeps me from skipping lessons in the beginning is this book teaches different things in the meeting book as well as it teaches number writing in the student book. Fluttershy made towers with the linking cubes with numbers 1-9, and writing numbers 1,4, and 5.DSC_0226

Writing: In our Zaner-Bloser hand writing this week Fluttershy learned the correct way to write upper and lower case letter L. We spent all week practicing every day for 10 minutes.

Explode the Code: We worked on learning the different safety kid rules by starting with #1 & 2.  Never talk to strangers and always use the buddy system.

Science: Exploring science unit 4 week 3. This week’s topic was clouds.  We learned that clouds are made from water vapor. We couldn’t have planned a better week for cloud watching with all the storms we’ve had.  Fluttershy enjoyed collecting soil from the garden to make a cloud for her experiment this week.  We also made our own clouds using paint and cotton balls. DSC_0216

Reading: She learned this week the vowel pair oo and ou as in goose and soup.  We also played fun game called Cross the River.  In this game she had to get her squinky safely across the river by only landing on the stones (index card) that had a word with the u sound. Each row had three card and she had to read all three and pick out the u sounding work.  She did very well with this.  And what was great is we used words like few, due, stew, cute, and tube.  Not all the words even had a u in it.  She flew through the game the first day and requested to play it a second time that day.  We then played it every day this week at her request.

Passed off I see Sam Set 3 book 20

Art: We combined music and art for our lines of movement activity.  I played 6 different pieces of music for the girls while they drew a line across their paper.  The idea was for them to feel the different tones of the music.  Rarity was a silly goof ball and just drew all over her paper, but Fluttershy gave it her best effort and made different types of lines for the different music.  We played different classical pieces, country, pop, and something from the kids music channel (something to do with a princess if I recall right).DSC_0229
