Storm in the Night (FI♥AR)

April 1-5, 2013Storm in the Night

"Grandfather, Thomas, and the cat, Ringo, find themselves in the middle of a storm, where all the lights have gone out. They’re trying to figure out what to do because they can’t see enough to read and the electricity is out, so they can’t watch TV either. Grandfather decides to tell Thomas of a tale about when he was a little boy and a storm he found himself afraid in. He tells of how his bravery took over when he realized that his little dog, Melvin, was all alone outside and that he had to put his fear aside to venture out and rescue him. Written by Mary Stolz and beautifully illustrated by Pat Cummings."

We enjoyed this book a lot and had fun learning about weather.  Each day we tried to do something that was weather related and were fortunate enough to have a few storm ourselves this week.  Couldn't have planned it this book better.  The only thing we didn't get was a power out. So we created out own power out on Friday and listened to all the sound of our house.

Day 1:

  • We made a tornado in a bottle.

  • Watched a Youtube video of a tornado

  • Talked a bit about different kinds of weather and worked on a weather unit study

Day 2:

  • Made our own cloud Art (Unit study) using cotton balls

  • Cloud in a bottle experiment (unit study).  This took a couple of tries, but we sort of got it working.

Day 3:

  • Since we were blessed with a nice spring rain storm we made a rain gauge and stuck it out in the yard to watch.
