Grandfathers Journey

"This is a touching picture book about three generations of a Japanese family who are torn between a love for the land of California and a love for the mountains and villages of Japan. The author shares how he knows and understands his grandfather now that he has experienced the same emotion of leaving his home in Japan and settling in California - and the strong and constant desire to be in both places at once." -Rainbow Resource

Activities we did this week for Grandfathers Journey:

  • We made a volcano and erupted it.  In the book it talked about mountains a lot.  I thought the girls would have fun making their own volcano with flowing lava.

  • Over the span of the book it talked about 4 generations so we made a family tree of our own.

  • Made cherry blossom pictures to show a bit of Japan.

  • Watched big bird in japan.

Step to make a volcano:

  1. Make salt dough

  2. Using a small jar or spice jar form your salt dough around it to look like a volcano.

  3. Once your volcano has dried for a few days paint it.

  4. Mix your lava solution (recipe below)

  5. Watch your lava flow and flow.

Lava solution

You’ll need:

2 Tablespoons warm water
1 teaspoon yeast

1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide
4-5 drops food coloring
squirt of dish soap

  1. Mix the warm water and yeast in a small bowl and set aside.

  2. Pour hydrogen peroxide, food coloring, and a good squirt of dish soap in the bottle.  Set volcano on a cookie sheet.

  3. Stir the yeast mixture up till it’s mixed well and pour into your volcano.

  4.  Watch the mixture slowly ooze up and out of the bottle.  The neat thing is it continues for over 5 minutes.
