"Lentil just wanted to sing so badly - but whenever he tried, the most horrible croak-like sound came out. He had an idea one day to get a harmonica and teach himself how to play. Soon he could play well, and he played everywhere and all down the streets - past the finest house which belonged to the great Colonel Carter; by the library, which was a gift of the great Colonel Carter; through the Carter Memorial Park; and on and on. As you know by now, Colonel Carter is a very important, generous, respected town figure. When he comes back to town after two years, everybody is excited except the grouchy Sneep. When Sneep tries to sabotage the welcome-home festivities, can Lentil save the day?" Rainbow Resources
This week for Five in a row we rowed Lentil. Which turned out to be a lot of fun with the lemon theme. We made lemonade, made our own Harmonicas, and did many experiments that had to do with our mouths.
Day 1: Social Studies: Patriotism
- Listened to She’ll be coming round the mountain
- Made a tongue map- We explored the concept of sweet, sour, bitter, and salty by trying little samples of salt, sugar, lemon juice, and cocoa.
- Watched Buddy Green play a harmonica at Carnegie Hall on Youtube- Which was pretty amazing how he made music with a harmonica good enough to play at Carnegie Hall.
- Located Ohio on our map
Day 2 Art
- Craft: Soap whittling
- Rock breath experiment- watch how the oxygen we blew into our lime (the chemical, not the fruit) water turned cloudy.
- Tasted lemons to see how mouths pucker from the sour- surprisingly the girls didn't have the reaction I thought we'd have. Maybe our lemon was sweet.
Day 3: Math
- Sandwich fractions- for lunch we cut our sandwich into 1/2's and then 1/4ths.
- Stuffy smellers experiment- Blindfolded we all tried cubed potatoes, apples, and yes onions all with our noses plugged. It's surprising how our taste is affected by the sense of smell.
Day 4: Science
- Hot and cold experiment- Discovered that the warm orange juice didn't taste as sour as the frozen lemon juice.
Day 5: Language arts
- Watched lentil on Youtube
- Made lemonade for dinner
Math this week:
- Copy shapes and lines with our geoboards
- Fluttershy learned how to count to 50¢ using dimes.
- We also played grocery store where she got to pay for her items with her dimes. Fun times.
