Rock hunting

7-15Rock hunting

This last weekend we went on a fun family adventure collecting fossilized shells, clams, and mud balls.  We went to three different locations to collect these and we had a fun time collecting them. They were all so plentiful and all over the ground the girls had no problem collecting all they wanted.  The shells were scattered all over the mountain side it was like walking along the beach. We were surprised how intact the fossils were.

A fun to find was the mud balls.  I've never heard of them before.  They ranged from 1" to 6" in size.  There were plenty of the smaller ones just lying on the ground, but if you dig just barely under the ground we unearthed some rather large ones.  Once we got home we sliced them open to reveal beautiful designs inside.  Apparently the center is some depree like a shell that mud formed around as it rolled around in a body of water.  Layer after layer was formed till the water dried up and then they fossilized.  Every one was different and we did find some elongated ones that had a whole spiral shell inside that had crystallized. We polished some up and they are very pretty.
